REVIEW: Exposure 37 at Slack Space

A new photography exhibition, Exposure 37, launched at Slack Space yesterday. Ellie Pullen headed down to the gallery to view the diverse collection of work and find out more.

The exhibition, curated by Mariya Ustymenko and David Ross, features photos from “a broad range of artists from the local community,” including both amateur and professional photographers, students and artists, some showcasing their work for the first time.

When asked how she and David came up with the name Exposure 37, Mariya explained: “the standard and most popular roll of 35mm film has 36 exposures. Most of us have experienced, at one time or another, a multiple, unexpected exposure at the end of the roll of film.

“This is caused by the final ‘frame’ being exposed twice or more through continuous shooting when the film has finished, but the camera continued to allow the opening and closing of the shutters.

“Very often these extra exposures produce wonderful and atmospheric images that are a complete surprise, therefore unique and, at times, very special.”

Despite this being the inspiration for the exhibition, Mariya and David didn’t want to deter prospective photographers. Instead, they decided “to treat Exposure 37 as a metaphor representing images holding within them an element of surprise.”

The photographers showcased have all interpreted the exhibition’s brief in different ways. This means that each image displayed is unique in its approach to the theme, its subject matter and its final presentation in the gallery.

“We are pleased and proud to say that the show exceeded our expectations in the diversity of approaches taken by the photographers,” said Mariya. “We hope it will be well received by the public and are very excited with its launch.”

The exhibition runs until Saturday 1st October at Slack Space, Colchester.
